Technology is continually getting better and faster. Every new technology builds off technology that has come before it. For example, the Internet would not have come along if it were not for the inventions of the printing press, the telegraph, the telephone, the radio and the television. For this reason, people may have forgotten the impact that old inventions once had on our society. People have become so dependent on technology that they rarely even think about what they're doing while they're using it. In Tyler's post, he describes this invisible technology as something people get so used to that they don't even think about how it impacts they're lives. I think this is very evident in our society today. Just to mention a few, we use cars, computers and phones in our everyday lives. If one of these were to fail, that person would be faced with a serious problem because of how dependent our society has become on these things. I think children growing up in today's society are most vulnerable to this invisible technology. Most kids are on their phones 24/7. I bet a lot of them could text blindfolded. It has become almost second nature for these kids when it comes to working a phone.
Tyler's blog identifies different people's opinions of technology. Some people think technology has enhanced our society and others believe we have become too dependent on technology. I think there is a strong case for both sides, but in actuality, there is a little truth in each side and that neither side can be disproved. I think children growing up today have much less personal interaction than generations preceding them. They communicate so much on their phones and online that they may have lost some face-to-face communication skills. Also, people can post things online anonymously. Many people have used this tool as a way to say rude and cruel things without having any consequences. On the other hand, there are many benefits of much faster communication. I was listening to the radio on my way to school one morning about a week ago and heard a fascinating story. A man was home alone when his house caught on fire. Unfortunately, this man had muscular dystrophy. He knew he would not be able to reach the telephone, but he was close enough to a computer, so he posted a status update calling for help on Facebook. Two of his friends, neither of which lived nearby, called 9-1-1. Their calls were redirected to the mans local fire department, which arrived at his house within ten minutes of the status update. Pretty cool, huh.
