Artifact 1: News sources
The information posted in the article, Internet Surpasses Television as Main News Source for Young Adults, does not surprise me at all. Young people are so technology savvy that checking the Internet for the news is extremely easy and convenient. I can understand why older people are less likely to use the Internet to check the news because they are not as comfortable with using newer technology. Without growing up around these newer technologies, older people would have a difficult time navigating through the Internet to find what they're looking for. I know my parents don't get on the Internet very often. Everyday my dad comes home around five and my parents sit down and watch the news at six. Every now and then I'll watch the news with them. Watching the news on TV does not require doing anything except watching and listening, but it does take up a good chunk of time. If I wasn't very busy and felt like relaxing I think watching the news on TV would be the best option. But in today's society, free time and relaxation are rare occurrences. The Internet provides a fast and easy way to check up on the news and with the Internet being so accessible, it is very convenient. These days, you don't have to be around a computer to access the Internet because most cell phones are capable of doing that. I recently upgraded my cell phone to a smart phone. I now have Internet on my phone, something I didn't have before. It is really easy to check on things when you're on the go. Personally, I don't check the news much on the Internet, but I can see the advantages of the Internet. I prefer watching the news on television and listening to a person talk about the major events in the world. When I go on the Internet, I have trouble finding what I'm looking for because of all the pop-ups and links that take me in different directions. With older people not growing up around or experiencing newer technologies, they would have a difficult time learning how to use computers and cell phones, especially because they are accustomed to doing things a certain way. I think that is why older people are still more likely to watch the television to find the news. Although there may be more efficient ways to find the breaking events in the world, it is difficult to change a persons habits when they have been doing something a particular way for many years. Although navigating through the Internet may be like a second nature to younger people, a lot of older people may have great difficulties because of how little experience they have with the Internet and how irrelevant it may be in their day to day lives. When children make searching the Internet look so easy, they may not understand how much more experience they have over other people because of how often they are using the Internet for social networking, homework, and searching the news.
